Designing the Future of In-Car Experiences: A Conversation with Piotr Klarowski, Senior Product Designer (Automotive UX/HMI)
Today we’re sitting down with Piotr Klarowski, a seasoned product designer whose decade-long career spans UX in EVs, ADAS, and autonomous mobility. Piotr has held key design roles at Toyota’s Advanced UX organization (Woven by Toyota), the EV startup Arrival, and Samsung, and is known for his holistic approach to automotive interface design. He also speaks and writes publicly about the future of mobility and human-centered vehicle interfaces.
1. Piotr, could you share what drives your passion for automotive UX and HMI design?
Piotr Klarowski: “I’m drawn to big, open-ended challenges—especially where tech, design, and real-world mobility meet. In the automotive space, every interface is part of a broader system—from sensors to software to infrastructure—and that system-level complexity is where I thrive. Whether it’s an EV startup, traditional OEM, or consumer tech company, I aim to shape mobility experiences that feel intuitive, safe, and inspiring.”
2. You’ve worked across both large firms and startups. How has that shaped your design philosophy?
Piotr: “At Toyota’s Advanced UX team, I learned what it takes to design for scale, safety, and regulation—especially for ADAS and automated parking systems. In contrast, Arrival pushed me to rethink mobility from the ground up—EV platforms, microfactory production, and brand-new UX paradigms. That blend has made me both detail-oriented and visionary.”
3. Tell us about your public speaking and writing. What topics do you focus on most?
Piotr: “I regularly speak on emerging patterns in HMI, connected mobility, and how UX converges with software-defined vehicles. One highlight was the “Mobility evolution: Beyond 5G” session at the University of Tokyo’s DLX Design Academy, where we discussed how 5G and connectivity reshape in-car experiences. I also write on Medium—my articles break down complex Car UX ideas into relatable narratives for designers and stakeholders alike.”
4. How would you describe your aspirations for mobility’s future?
Piotr: “I’m a believer in ‘tech for good.’ A mobility future doesn’t have to be dystopian—I’m inspired by ‘solarpunk’ ideas: cities powered by renewable energy, transparent systems, and human-centered connectivity. My work is geared toward that positive, sustainable vision.”
5. Press: What personal or creative projects complement your professional design work?
Piotr: “I love sketching, wireframing, and even creating typefaces—like my ‘Tetromino’ font on FontStruct. Design is storytelling, and these side explorations keep my craft sharp, whether I’m ideating new interfaces or iterating polished interaction flows.”
Closing Note: With a foundation that spans OEM rigor to startup agility, Piotr Klarowski continues to shape future-forward automotive design—blending safety, accessibility, and imaginative vision into the in-car experience.
